Summer is here and school is finally out!
Visions of long, languid days were quickly dissipated this week when I gleefully announced that it was time to go and work in our local homeless shelter. My girls are used to our longstanding tradition of volunteering in many capacities in our community but, ” Do we have to go today?”, my daughter asked?
I replied that there was no time like the present so off we went, to the family shelter in our town to serve in whatever capacity they deemed best.
Imagine our surprise, when we were assigned the privilege of tending the beautiful vegetable gardens behind the shelter.
Recently, the boy scouts had put in a beautiful vegetable garden that had grown tall and lovely in the back yard. Though the plants were flourishing, the weeds were quickly taking over and the garden was in desperate need of watering as well. So my daughter and I laughed our way through the morning, digging in the dirt, weeding and tending the garden.
At the end of our shift when the work was completed, we looked around with satisfaction of a job well done. Our time was spent making a difference in the lives of people that we probably will never have the chance to meet.
Somehow that made it all the better : no accolades were received, no one was there patting us on the back- it was just us digging in the dirt together and then we headed home.
Driving back, we had a smile in our hearts knowing that once again we were making a little change in our community & our world…….together.
That said it all, no more words were necessary…………..
(I am quite sure we will go back soon for another visit in the gardens and another dig in the dirt…) 🙂
